Our knife block journey
Tim Volovsek is the Founder and creator of KnivesUp. After a 35 year career in education as a teacher, school administrator, and education consultant, Tim decided to make the leap at age 61 to launch KnivesUp. A lifelong builder and craftsman, Tim built two of his family's homes in Michigan from the ground up and renovated three. Using his skills as a woodworker he was able to create a product that is simple, useful, and well-made.
The idea for KnivesUp began during a culinary journey in his family’s kitchen. After years of cluttered counters, hitting his hand on the bottom of the cabinet when removing a knife, and then having to move the knife block again and again to clean, he had had enough. With those three things in mind; clutter, cleaning, and ease of use, he created his first under-cabinet knife block. Now, 20 or so iterations later, KnivesUp is finally here and ready for you to use in your kitchen. .
Handmade in Michigan, KnivesUp is a simple, sleek solution to knife storage. Made locally with solid wood each KnivesUp block is carefully crafted by Tim and easy to install with no tools or hardware needed. It’s perfect for any kitchen, from a small city apartment to large chefs kitchens, KnivesUp allows everyone to utilize kitchen space effectively.
Tim earned Masters’ Degrees from the University of Wisconsin Madison and Grand Valley State University and lives in Mid-Michigan with his wife Marie and dog Kikko.
